Interview by Sheryl Aronson, Lee Talks his New Play A HEATED DISCUSSION →

June 15, 2022 in Creative Process, Theatre, Writing

The Robey Theatre Company presents, A HEATED DISCUSSION, a commissioned play written by award winning playwright Levy Lee Simon. In a celestial setting, 3 Orishas,(Yemeya, Oya, and Oshun) call on the aid of several iconic figures to discuss what needs to happen on earth with Black struggle since they left the planet. They don't all agree, and thus ensues a heated discussion. The participants are: Ida B. Wells, Malcolm X, Nina Simone, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Lorraine Hansberry, Tupac, Maya Angelou, Ricard Pryor, Zora Neale Hurston, Bob Marley, Dr. Frances Cress Welson, and James Baldwin. I have not created their words. I have taken their own words and put them in a context to create a play. It was a huge undertaking but I feel it works. I'll allow you to tell me, tell us. I hope you can make it out. A HEATED DISCUSSION running from April 9th through May 15th. See less.
